AITA for Not Giving Up My Window Seat on a Flight?
Airplane etiquette can be tricky, especially when it comes to seating arrangements. One traveler found themselves in a tense situation after refusing to give up their window Seat on a Flight. Were they right to hold their ground, or should they have been more considerate?
The Original Post: I Paid for My Seat, So I Kept It

A Last-Minute Request Put Me in an Awkward Spot
I recently took a long-haul flight and booked a window seat well in advance because I love the view and prefer leaning against the wall to sleep. When I got to my seat, a woman sitting in the middle asked if I would switch with her because she “gets claustrophobic in the middle seat.”
I felt bad, but I declined. I had specifically chosen my seat, and it wasn’t fair for me to be uncomfortable for hours just because she didn’t plan ahead. She got upset, saying I was being inconsiderate. A flight attendant even asked if I could switch to “be nice.”
I still said no, and she spent the flight sighing loudly and complaining to the person next to her. Now I’m wondering if I should have just given up my seat to avoid the drama. Am I the asshole?
The Community Reacts: Justified or Rude?
Many people agreed that not giving up a seat on a flight was completely fair.
“You booked your seat. She should have done the same.”
“Claustrophobia isn’t your responsibility. If it was that serious, she should have made arrangements beforehand.”
“People always try to guilt others into switching. You were right to say no.”
However, some thought I could have been more understanding.
“If she truly had claustrophobia, switching wouldn’t have hurt you that much.”
“Sometimes being kind is more important than being right.”
“A window seat isn’t a big deal. You could have swapped and made her trip easier.”
The Verdict: Fair or Selfish?
While some felt I should have been more accommodating, most agreed that not giving up a seat on a flight was justified.
At the end of the day, people book specific seats for a reason. Would you have made the same choice? Let us know in the comments!
