His Best Friend and I Don’t Get Along

My fiancé and I are in the middle of wedding planning, and we recently started discussing our wedding party. I told him I don’t want his best friend, Jake, to be a groomsman.

Jake has never liked me. He’s made passive-aggressive comments about our relationship, constantly jokes that my fiancé will “change his mind,” and has even told him he’s “settling down too soon.” I’ve tolerated him for years, but I don’t want that energy on one of the most important days of my life.

My fiancé says I should “let it go” and that Jake is important to him. But I don’t feel comfortable including someone who clearly disrespects me. Now, my fiancé is upset, and I’m wondering if I’m making a mistake. Am I the asshole?

The Community Reacts: Fair Boundary or Overreaction?

Many people agreed that not including my partner’s friend in our wedding party was completely justified.

“Your wedding should be surrounded by people who love and support you both.”

“If Jake disrespects you, why should he get a special role on your big day?”

“Your fiancé needs to stand up for you. This isn’t just his wedding.”

However, others thought I was being too controlling.

“He’s your fiancé’s best friend. Can’t you just ignore him for one day?”

“Picking battles is important in marriage—this might not be worth it.”

“Maybe set boundaries with Jake instead of banning him from the wedding party.”

The Verdict: Personal Boundaries or Wedding Drama?

While some believed I should compromise, most agreed that not including my partner’s friend in our wedding party was a reasonable decision given the circumstances.

At the end of the day, a wedding should be about love and support. Would you allow a disrespectful friend in your wedding party, or would you stand firm? Let us know in the comments!
