AITA for Refusing to Let My Parents Move in After They Retired?
Family obligations can be complicated, especially when it comes to housing. One man found himself at odds with his family after refusing to let his retired parents move in with him. Was he justified, or was he being too harsh?
The Original Post: My Parents Want to Move In, But I’m Not Comfortable
They Assumed I Would Take Them In
My parents recently retired and decided to sell their home to downsize. They assumed they would be able to move in with me—without ever asking me first.

I live alone in a home I worked hard to afford. While I love my parents, I also value my space and independence. When they brought up moving in, I told them I wasn’t comfortable with it. They were shocked and hurt, saying that “family takes care of each other” and that I was being selfish.
They claimed they sacrificed so much to raise me, so the least I could do was let them stay with me. Now, my relatives are calling me ungrateful, and my parents are barely speaking to me. But I don’t think it’s fair for them to assume they can just live with me for free. Am I the asshole?
The Community Reacts: Was I Justified?
Many people supported my decision, saying that refusing to let my parents move in was reasonable.
-
“Your home, your rules. You shouldn’t be guilt-tripped into this.”
-
“They should have had a plan instead of assuming they could rely on you.”
-
“Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you don’t love them.”
However, others thought I was being too harsh.
“They took care of you for years. It’s only fair to return the favor.”
“In some cultures, it’s expected that children take in their aging parents.”
“Couldn’t you at least let them stay temporarily while they figure things out?”
The Verdict: Boundaries or Betrayal?
While some believed I owed it to my parents, most agreed that refusing to let my parents move in was my right.
At the end of the day, family obligations shouldn’t come at the expense of personal boundaries. Would you have made the same decision? Let us know in the comments!
