AITA for Having a Child-Free Wedding Despite My Sister’s Objections?
Weddings are supposed to be about celebrating love, but sometimes, they spark unexpected drama. My fiancé and I decided early on that we wanted a child-free wedding. We thought it was a reasonable choice-until my sister reacted with outrage, insisting that she wouldn’t attend if her kids weren’t welcome. Now, I’m left wondering if I’m the bad guy for sticking to my decision.

Why We Chose a Child-Free Wedding
From the beginning, we envisioned our wedding as an elegant, adult-only event. We wanted our guests to enjoy themselves without the stress of chasing after little ones. It wasn’t a slight against kids – we love them! But we felt that an evening wedding with alcohol and late-night celebrations wouldn’t be suitable for children.
When I announced our decision, most of our friends and family were understanding-except for my sister. She has two young kids and was livid that she’d have to find childcare or miss the wedding altogether. She told me I was being selfish and accused me of excluding her family on purpose.
The Verdict: Am I in the Wrong?
Some people agreed with me, saying:
“Your wedding, your rules. If she can’t respect that, it’s her choice not to attend.”
“A child-free wedding is completely normal, and plenty of couples do it.”
“She’s acting entitled-she could hire a babysitter for one night.”
Others took her side, arguing:
“You should have made an exception for immediate family—she’s your sister.”
“Some parents can’t easily find childcare, and excluding them is unfair.”
“You knew this would cause issues, so why not compromise?”
Final Thoughts: Should I Reconsider?
At the end of the day, my fiancé and I believe that our wedding should reflect our vision. But I don’t want to cause unnecessary family drama. Is it worth standing firm on our decision, or should I make an exception for my sister’s kids?
What do you think? Was I right to enforce a child-free rule, or should I have made an exception? Let me know in the comments!
