The US Will Acquire Greenland, or It’s an “Unfriendly Act” by Denmark, Says Trump

Ownership of Greenland isn’t just a matter for the US—it’s about safeguarding the free world, something Denmark can’t provide, says Donald Trump.

The US president reiterated his desire for Greenland during a conversation with journalists onboard Air Force One, reports the BBC. Speaking during a flight from Las Vegas to Miami, Trump not only restated his interest in acquiring Greenland but also warned that Denmark’s refusal to cooperate would be viewed as a “very unfriendly act.”

“I’m not sure what claim Denmark thinks it has over Greenland, but not agreeing to this would be a very unfriendly gesture. This isn’t about the US—it’s about protecting the free world,” Trump said.

Denmark Can’t Ensure Protection, Trump Argues

Trump expressed his belief that Greenland will ultimately align with the United States because, as he put it, the issue revolves around global freedom.

“It’s not about the US, except for the fact that we are the ones who can provide freedom. Denmark can’t,” he added, suggesting that Greenlanders would prefer to “be with us.”

Controversial Call Between Trump and Danish PM

These comments come after a contentious report about a phone conversation between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on January 15. According to The Financial Times, the 45-minute call was described as “very bad,” with Trump reportedly being confrontational and aggressive when Frederiksen reiterated that Greenland was not for sale.

However, Denmark’s Prime Minister’s Office disputed this account, claiming it did not recognize the portrayal of events reported by the media.

Diplomatic Tone Shift

Interestingly, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen noted a more positive tone during a recent conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking with TV 2, Rasmussen said Greenland wasn’t even brought up during their discussion, which he interpreted as a sign of progress.

“It’s better to discuss this matter later when it’s properly prepared rather than rushing into it prematurely,” Rasmussen explained.

Trump Revives Canada Statehood Idea

While Greenland has been the focus of Trump’s ambitions, he also revived his earlier statements about Canada. Speaking on Air Force One, Trump expressed his affection for the country, where he claimed to have many friends.

“Honestly, I see Canada as a country that should be a state. They’d receive much better treatment, better healthcare, lower taxes, and they’d be much safer,” Trump said, as reported by AP.

The Bigger Picture

While Trump’s remarks on Greenland and Canada have sparked international reactions, they underscore his administration’s broader geopolitical strategy. The question remains: how will Denmark and Canada respond to these bold proposals?
